Abstract
There are several techniques that have been employed to make diabetes self-management programs culturally tailored to Hispanic communities. Among these include leading the self-management courses in Spanish and even more so with an instructor of the same cultural background. Another widely used approach is encouraging participants to bring a family member to the classes. In addition, many culturally tailored DSME programs hold classes in a community setting instead of health care centers to increase attendance rates. Lastly, incorporating cooking classes or educating patients on healthier eating based on culturally traditional foods has been utilized in culturally tailored DSME courses.
