Abstract
In honor of Sustainability Month, join us on April 20th at noon at the Digital Wall in the Library (1st floor) for “What’s My Research?” presentations by Drs. Paul Orwin (Biology department) and Mary Kay Camarillo (Engineering department). Dr. Orwin will speak about biofilm formation and horizontal gene transfer in the bacterial species Variovorax paradoxus, which grows in the soil surrounding plant roots and can increase the plant’s ability to resist disease and drought. Dr. Camarillo will describe lithium extraction from geothermal brines. Demand for lithium is skyrocketing due to increased production of electric vehicles that rely on lithium batteries. The Salton Sea is a potential lithium source, but extraction from the brine poses technological and environmental challenges, which Dr. Camarillo will discuss.
A light lunch will be served.
