Description
The sperm entry point polarizes the oocyte/zygote. The sperm cell donates DNA plus a centrosome (blue circle) to the egg. The centrosome acts as a microtubule organizing center (MTOC) for the spindle. The sperm and egg MTOCs move to opposite poles of the cell as the nuclear envelopes disintegrate and the cell becomes diploid. In mammals, the sperm entry point is often perpendicular to the zygotic metaphase plate and first cleavage
