Mr. John Muir,
Martinez, Cal.

My dear Muir:-

A Merry Christmas to you and yours! This is the first time I have written that sentiment this year.
You will be very sorry to hear that night before last Prof. Sargent's house at Brookline - or rather the south wing of it, including the drawing-rooms- was destroyed by fire,- a loss to him of $25,000. He succeeded in rescuing some of the heirlooms and pictures, but they were considerably damaged. I know you will be distressed to hear this.
