My dear Mail":
I am delighted to see the handwriting in your note of November 27th, a cheering sight to one in my physical condition.
As for your syndicate letters you know what ought to be said a great deal better than I do. My idea would be in a general way to write them in such a way as to arouse a general interest throughout the country in western forests, that is describe their beauty, importance, something of the trees that compose them and the destruction through fire, sheep, etc., that man is inflicting. There is no one in the United States who can do this in such a telling way as you can and in. writing these letters you will perform a patriotic service. This being said, I do not see how you can "quit" this job, although I know your capacity in that direction is large. The time, I hope, will come when you and I together will be able to make some studies of the age, size, etc., of the Redwoods. If I am not able to do it with you will, I hope, some day or other do yourself for the Redwood what you have done for the Big Tree.
