John Muir Esq.
Dear Sir,
While your name ancdreputation as a high protector of the forests of our Sierras has been familiar to me for years past, it is only the other day that I read in the Daily that your address is " Martinez "., though I also find that you are said to be associated with Yale College.
I trust me letter will reach you.
I have been collecting the flora of the Counties of Amador, Alpine and Calaveras , and distribute sets of exsiccatae to many seats of lear-ning in the old world. I intend to apply to Yale for subscription, and prove here what my reputation in the old world says I furnish. I have written a booklet on our [illegible] Sierras , and have received many kind letters in response. May I petition you for purchase of a copy ? 50 cents will buy the full list of my collection and the booklet . Please, re-
member me with an order for a copy .
While my collection of exsiccatae is on a purely scientific plan, I could easily select a pretty set of, say , one to three hundred of the neatest and showiest of plants, and if you have any use for them , plea -se , believe that you do a double service : you gain for yourself achoice lot of sweet specimens, and at same time give employment to a man sorely in need of such . I charge $7.00 per century of properly gotten out specimens, labeled , numbered , and beyond reproach in preparation.
Respectfully yours
