Martinez, Nov. 17, 1902 Dear Mr. Hughes: Many thanks for your kind letter of the 14th […] & the package of photographs. The chipmunk is a gem-the only life size picture of this blessed little beast I have ever seen. That of myself from your own negative my wife & daughters say is capital & so it seems to me & it is to be framed. It seems surprising that you have been able to get so fine & telling effect from so small a negative. The copy from the new negative is quite satisfactory & I enclose $6-for a dozen copies and the negative, which any time at your convenience I wish you could hand to Mr. McCullagh as I don’t know his address. I thank you also for your kind article in the “Mail” You should describe some of your trips in the mountains. I feel sure they would be interesting for this article shows you can write & with your fine photographs you could give first rate illustrations. Thanking you again & realizing the depths of my indebtedness I am sincerely yours, John Muir
