[letterhead]June 18 - 1914John Muir Esq.Martinez, CaliforniaDear Mr. Muir-Mr. Joseph Pennell has written me requesting that I see you and talk over the matter of my contemplated Exhibition of his beautiful original Lithographs and Etchings of The Yosemite Valley; The Grand Canyon and of San Francisco. In the same Exhibition [illegible] [will?] also be included the Panama subjects [illegible] [and?] some of the Grecian Prints. It is planned to give this Exhibit, with [illegible] opening reception of course, during the first [illegible]e weeks of October 1914 in my Print-Rooms [illegible] are located at 107 Grant [Avenue?], S.F. on the05777
[letterhead]top floor over John Howell's Book Shop. I would hardly expect you to know of my place as yet since I have only been established about 8 months.A gallery devoted exclusively to the Exhibition of Fine Prints must necessarily be something of a cross between an art museum & a business but I trust that my [venture?] will meet with the approval of those on the coast who care for the fine things of art.Mr. Pennell & myself desire your cooperation [illegible] the extent of writing an Introduction to the [catalogue?] which I will print & distribute. This catalogue will be rather a nice thing [illegible] privately printed. We thought you might [be?] willing to write such an Introduction [about?] the Yosemite and Grand Canyon things [illegible]ially and Mr. Pennell's art generally.05777
3. [letterhead]If I could see you I think I could make myself much clearer, and if I hear from you to that effect, I will come out to see you at Martinez. Your visit at my gallery however, some time when it is convenient for you to be in the city, would have the added virtue of your being able to inspect the pictures themselves.Under a separate [cover?] I am mailing you [a?] few catalogues published by Albert Roullier —[Chicago?] which will give a general idea of the [sort] of thing I contemplate.Trusting to receive the favor of a reply at [illegible] early convenience, I am-yours respectfullyHill Tolerton05777
