[in margin: Death of Jerome Fay.]3226 King St., So. BerkeleyDec. 29, 1912Mr. John Muir,My dear Sir:Christmas-day a telegram came to us from Jerome Fay of Siskiyou County that he was ill, his brother, Charley Fay of South Berkeley (my uncle) left for Gazelle that evening. Friday afternoon uncle Jerome and uncle Charley left there for Berkeley. Saturday morning Dec. 28th as the train left Redding uncle Jerome breathed his last, he has suffered for many years with heart-disease and with the effects of the relapse at Christmas time and the excitement of the trip here he had not the reserve strength to sustain him.Uncle Jerome used to tell us of the trips you used to have 05334

together on Mt Shasta and of the wonderful knowledge you had as a naturalist and now that your old guide has passed on I thought perhaps you would like to hear of this last journey where he has entered other plains of progress.Several years ago, my husband called at your home and mentioned that he had married Jerome Fay's niece and you sent your gift of, "Our National Parks," for which I thanked you for at the time and shall always thank you for, the book is so charmingly written and it is indeed gratifying to know that you are one of the earth's favored ones who can really express in written words what can be seen about us, but so few of us realize after all.Uncle Jerome is to be cremated Tuesday, Dec. 31st, at 3 P. M. and his ashed to be shipped to Siskiyou County. With very best of wishes for 1913 I amMost sincerely,Carrie Fay Baxley3226 King St.So. Berkeley
