EDITORIAL ROOMSHOUGHTON MIFFLIN COMPANY4 PARK STREET . BOSTONDecember 11, 1912.John Muir, Esq.,Martinez, California.Dear Mr. Muir:You may have noticed, the announcements regarding our Riverside Readers that we are publishing for use in the schools. We are attempting to make these Readers just as attractive as possible to children, both from the point of view of their literary content and of their appearance. It is our hope that by means of these books a large number of children throughout the country will become better acquainted with the authors on our list and that this school acquaintance will lead later to the extensive reading of their works. Naturally our own authors supply a large amount of the material in these books. We should like to use a selection from Stickeen for the Seventh Reader in this series as ,We think that this selection will perhaps be the best introduction of your writings to the children. We are sending you a marked copy of the book which will indicate the exact extent of the selection (pages 43-71) that we should like to make from the story, as well as the changes in paragraphing in order to make the story somewhat better adapted for oral reading in the schools. If, for any reason, you prefer that this paragraphing should not be done we will, of course, follow your wishes in this particular. You win observe that this selection makes quite a complete story in itself and will naturally whet the appetite of the children to read the entire narrative. We trust that you will agree with05314
