Martinez, April 31, 1912 Dear Miss Kellogg: Your kind holiday greeting has just come to hand on my return from South America and Africa. Had you gone with me the trip would have cost you nothing in money, but in hardships and dangers so much that I’m glad neither you or any other friend has shared them with me. Only a wild enthusiastic naturalist may be pardoned for asking friends to take such risks. Anyhow I went alone, and with usual good luck have returned in good health, like Tam O’ Shanter over a’ the ills of life victorious, and gloriously laden with rocks, mountains, forests, rivers, animals and other riches of those two grand continents. With all good wishes believe me ever faithfully your friend John Muir
