(Apr. 16, 1912)[letterhead]John MuirMartinez, CaliforniaDear Mr Muir:Early in Feb. I wrote you not knowing that you were in S. America.I am told by your friends in Los Angeles that you are now at home & advised to write again. This is the subject. We have now almost completed a very handsome set of portraits & letters of the 71 members of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. We have an excellent full page portrait of you and are very much in need of a few lines from you to mount with it in this Literary set.will you kindly allow us to have just a few lines from you in reply to this to place opposite your portrait in the volume? The subject matter is not important, only a greeting of half a dozen lines will be of great value to us. Almost all these little letters are one-page [illegible] (to face the portraits) & the only essential is that they be your own writing & not type-written. May we beg of you just a few lines & we will be under obligations. Most cordially & Sincerely,Chas. Elmer RiceApr. 16" 191205176
