Prof John Muir

Dear Friend

I trust my explanation will be sufficient plea for pardon in troubling you. I think you have a warm corner in your heart for Portage and will tell you as briefly as possible my request. A Society of Ladies here have during the past winter made up cards 20 by 30 inches upon which we have pasted pictures of authors, Travellers

[Page 2]

etc each card devoted to one person. for instance one was of Longfellow. perhaps the following will give you an idea. These cards are put into the City [drawing of card] Library, and from there are loaned to the ward schools and the scholars are drilled (as a division) they are after a time exchanged and others take their place. Now will you kindly give me the address of certain Magazines which will

supply us with “Mr John Muir” portrait and perhaps the glacier and other things of interest to the young minds, we are trying to aid. We do not ask you to procure them but to aid us in the persuit. You doubtless hear from R frequently, and while there must be constant changes going on still there are many of the old acquaintances left who are glad to read articles from your pen indeed with enthusiasm and warm regard trusting to your good will I remain very sincerely yours
