[letterhead]Dec. 24, 1909Mr. John Muir,Muir, Cal.Dear Sir,Next spring, Mar 23-25, our association will meet in Pendleton, Oregon, about forty miles south of here. At that time Whitman College, of whose faculty I am a member, will be offering a course of lectures on Conservation. I write to enquire if it will be possible for you to visit both Teacher's Association and College and give one or more lectures at each. Mr. Wayne Darling one of the overseers of our college has strongly recommended that we write to you; and even without his recommendation our acquaintance with you as a writer and as a lover of woods and hills would give us pleasure in the prospect of seeing and hearing you.Our course in Conservation is free to students and citizens. The association will have some friends and will share with the college the expense of bringing you here. If you can come please let me know what the total expense04660 to us will be, including your travelling expenses.I hope that you will consent to come. You have friends, I know in this region who will welcome you. And you will have an opportunity to speak important truths to hundreds of teachers and students and citizens. We expect about five hundred teachers to be in attendance at Pendleton, from Eastern Oregon, Eastern Washington, Idaho, and Montana. Could you give at least two illustrated lectures in each place?Yours respectfully,Norman F. Coleman04660
