[4]I shall be most interested to hear all you will tell me of the Hetch Hetchy affair, when I see you again. I hope you drove long secure nails at every opportunity!Marian sends her love and so do I.It was a great surprise to hear of Helen's marriage. I had no idea it was to be so soon, from what you said when we were last with you.Affectionately yoursKatharine Hooker[1]San Francisco,Oct. 22nd[write [illegible] live to say you are better]Dear Mr MuirI am so sorry to hear you are ill. It was cruel for that wicked cold to catch you just as you [were?] leaving your forests and mountains having had a happy time in them. I should like to know if you are taking care of yourself, or being taken care of, for you surely need it. Such a cold is not to be trifled with.04612 [2]Marian and I are well, but up on our mountain side we are far from the Partola [diacritic] festivities [unless?] we [descend?] to meet them. Marian would have none of them, but as she had one holiday [illegible] [her?] she agreed to take a walk with me. Every concessive of that kind I look upon as [illegible] [pain?], for she does not get in exercise enough in her present life. We have walked to the Cliff House and footed it[3]through the park on several occasions and it does us both good. Then it is three miles from this place to my brother [illegible]'s home and we have done that several times also.I believe everything is as usual at Los Angeles. Eellie writes me the ups and downs of her school career. They have fifty seven scholars this year, but had to expel one, which was a momentous affair and very discomforting.
