Mr John Muir
Sir I have read with great interest your letters to the “Century” As I am informed you are a Scotchman long resident in California I would like to ask if you are a relative of mine My Father Henry Moir or Muir a native of Aberfoyle Perthshire (married Christiana Stewart) went to Ireland and became a Farmer there His younger brother John Moir or Muir went to California soon after the discovery of gold and followed gold mining for
some years some ten years afterwards my Mothers younger Brother Daniel Stewart went to California and accidently met & remained with my Uncle Moir They wrote some letters home since which time nothing has been heard from them Should you be the John Moir I describe as my uncle I would like to know what has become of my Uncle Daniel Stewart My parents have been dead for several years I came to Minneapolis six years ago but have a great fancy for the Pacific slope I have remained in the employment of a wealthy Milling & banking Firm here. I am married with one child
Should you not be the John Moir I describe I ask you to kindly enclose a line in the addressed envelope enclosed in this letter saying so & I promise the next Scotchman I meet I will do as much for if necessary Hoping that I am not causing you too much trouble
I remain Sir
Very faithfully yours
John Moir
P.S. Would you kindly say where I could procure books giving a good description of California particularly as to Farming interests and other information for the use of intending settlers J M
