[letterhead]Sunday Noon.My dear Mr. Muir:-So many people were pressing round you for a farewell word this morning that I was unable to get in more than a handshake. I felt myself lucky to get that, along with a friendly gleam from your eyes. But I did greatly desire to tell you in person how much I appreciated your hospitality of these past four weeks, how keenly I enjoyed the society of you & your fellows, & of your glorious mountains & forests. You have not over drawn a single picture in your books description of that country. it is all far fairer than I had anticipated, & my expectations were extravagantly high.As for Hetch Hetchy all I can04553[letterhead]say is that my own observations convinced me that its beauty cannot be enhanced by flooding, that it is unquestionably an essential feature of the park, & that I shall be proud to do my best to keep the public of my section alive to the [tenth?] of the situation. I am sending a letter to the Transcript today on the subject.Keep that new National Park Society alive & active. It is destined to awaken enthusiasm & support all over the country if pushed judiciously. I shall be glad to make a modest cash subscription to its Hetch Hetchy defense fund, as I intimated to Colby the other day, & will try to inspire others to do likewise. My son joins me in heartiest good wishes for you & all that you04553 [illegible][letterhead]may have at heart. When you go to Boston next, which I hope may be in the near future, pray do not fail to look me up. I live within five minutes of the Appalachian Club headquarters. Most Sincerely yours,Allen Chamberlain04553
