THROOP INSTITUTEPASADENA, CALIFORNIAPRESIDENT'S ROOMJune 23, 1909.John Muir, Esq., LL.D.,Martinez, California. My dear Dr. Muir:—On returning from Europe the other day I found an autograph copy of your book "Stikeen". I had already read the volume, and prize the oppertunity of having as mine a copy from the author's kind hands. As I wrote to our mutual friend, Mr. Vroman, I look upon Stikeen as the finest dog story that has ever come my way; and I think I have read the most of them, from John Brown to Mark Twain. I find that Mr. Vroman has also put a portrait of you in my office. I appreciate its presence here, but would prefer the original. I shall look forward with keen pleasure to an early meeting.Yours most sincerely,[illegible]04532
