EDITORIAL OFFICE OF ©©THE©© ATLANTIC MONTHLY 4 PARK ST. © BOSTON May 25, 1909.My dear Sir:A few weeks ago when I was making a trip through California I wrote you the enclosed note which explains itself, and now on my return to my office I hear from Messrs. Houghton, Mifflin and Company that there is really a chance that your autobiography, so long hoped for, may soon take material shape. If it does, I hope you will realize from the outset what a strong interest the Atlantic would take in such a piece of work by you and what sympathy it feels for the things which your life stands for.whenever you have any interesting news for us it will be most welcome.Very truly yours,John Muir, Esquire,Martinez, California.P. S, It is possible that you do not know that a year or so ago the Atlantic changed hands and is now altogether independent of Houghton, Mifflin & Company. This in no wise affects its policy, but merely gives it the great additional advantage of in-dependence and of an organization entirely devoted to the interests of the magazine.04509
