December 11,1908.John Muir, Esq.,
Martinez, Calif.
My dear Mr. Muir:

I have yours of the 3d instant and am very glad to hear from you again. I am glad the extra copies from the notes reached you safely, and thought I had mentioned that the shorthand notebooks were all destroyed, so that there is no possible way by which any part of the notes could be printed without your consent.
Of course, it is a hard task for you, and one requiring much time and thought before such a work is finally ready for the publisher, but I hope that for the sake of all the good folks who want to know more about you, you will keep everlastingly at it and that it may make its appearance were long.
Referring to the last paragraph of your letter I wish you would not feel that you are indebted to me, for I assure you that the pleasure and profit which I derived from learning to know you and your work is sufficient compensation for me and I feel gratified for the opportunity.
Trusting that you are well, with best wishes and hoping that your holiday season may be a bright and pleasant one, which it ought to be if you will but summon up those rich old memories, I am,

Sincerely yours,
[illegible]
