Rancho Chico, June 21, 1880.My Dear MuirYour kind letter to Mrs Bidwell I opened by mistake; but I have forwarded some to her at Washington, D.C. where she arrived three weeks ago and a little more – no, a little less. She will be delighted, and, I hope, be able to explain about the Polygonum &c But it is my turn now, having been misled by your lecture in which, with a meekness and innocence in describle, you acknowledged yourself out of the beaten track, but proclaimed your intention to continue therein – or rather thereout – by saying you were the happiest man living &c!! So you were caught, ha? Of course you were! and surrendered too – at discretion, of course. Well, I congratulate you, and welcome your return to civilization, and wish you every felicity – and remain very truly yours John Bidwell00926
