Martinez Dec. 2, 1908Dear Mr Calkins;I was very glad to get your kind refreshing letter with its cheery good tidings of your new home & work. I wish you were nearer so I might avail myself of your kind invitation, now I am compelled to work alone in the big house. When I think of moving south I see that a long hard time will be required to get my notes & books ready for shipment. I've been trying to sort my notes, & groan aghast at the vast mass. I never before knew that I was so crishingly killingly rich. To work the stuff into literature will require another three score & ten good work years. But I'm in pretty fair health, so is Helen at Daggett, & things in general are less disturbing09207
