Dear Mr. Muir.
The Board of Directors of the University Club have authorized me to write you in reply to your letter of October 29th. There is nobody in the Club and there never was a member whom we would delight to honor more than you. Therefore, in consideration of what you have done for the State and for the University Club, the Board would like to offer you an honorary membership. We would offer you this immediately, except that under our By-Laws honorary membership cannot be confered by the Board direct. We must go through the formality of submitting your name at the next meeting of the members, when I am sure we can then unanimously make you this offer.
The Board, therefore, hopes that you will withhold your resignation that we may in this manner keep you continuously with us. Personally I refuse to allow you to sever your connection with the Club. There is no one in the Club I hold in higher esteem. My only regret has been that you would not accept a dinner at our hands, that the members might have the privilege of meeting you and knowing you as I know you.
With best wishes, believe me,
Sincerely yours,
Thomas Magee
