Dear Mr. Muir:
It is not often that we have so keen pleasure as that which came to us to-day in Mr. Ticknor's letter telling us that we may hope soon to have the opportunity of publishing a book by you. There are several of us here in the office who have long been great admirers of "Stickteen," and we believe we can make a very successful little book of it. We will be particularly glad to give the book a place upon our fall list, which is, as it chances, an uncommonly good one; and we hope it will be possible for you to let us have the copy in the course of a month or two, so that we may take early steps to prepare a dummy, etc., and thus gain every possible advantage in preparing for the autumn's campaign.
We are equally interested in the possibility which Mr. Ticknor hints of books that may come from you upon the Yosemite country and upon Alaska; and we should be very grateful if you will give us at your entire convenience some information as to how your work upon them is progressing.
We believe that a few days ago a little brochure upon books and publicity, -lately prepared by the advertising department,-was sent you. May we say that it would give us very great pleasure to apply the processes therein narrated to a volume by you.
Mr. F. H. Allen, who, you will recall, is the member of our editorial department especially interested in outdoor books, wished me to make you his special compliments.
