[letterhead]Mch 4, 1908My dear Muir. The enclosed letter I received Monday. I hardily liked the tone of it, tho' Vroman did not seem to place the same force [to?] the objectionable sentence that I did. I wrote Calkins and quoting the sentence marked on first page of his letter (read it), I said I did not underdstand that any arrangement was made at my house, but only a talk to determine whether an arrangement along certain lines could be made, and that you were to take the matter under consideration, & determine later, after you had been home, and seen how things were up there.I told Vroman that I thought Mr Calkins might be all right & [desirable?] to aid you, but that I was fearfull of installing Mrs Calkins in your home, without fuller acquaintance with her & her manner & ability. That I thought it would be advisable that you, instead of taking them into your home, should come down here, go to their home in Los Angeles, and live a month with them. Mr Vroman fully agrees with me in this.04081 235This would enable you to size up the whole proposition, without getting them [fastened?] onto you, and, perhaps, hard to get rid of, in case they did not suit. Besides it would be handy for you to run up to see Helen over Sundays and to come out for a few days, [to?] a time, to see us for a change. We are sorry to learn that you have the grippe and do hope you will soon get over it. My sister Emilie arrived last Monday, and we have just learned, that Judge Garnett and his wife expect to leave Chicago next Monday for our house. This will make no difference, we will have a bed for you at any time you may be able to drop in on us.Faithfully yoursA H SellersJust think of [JM?] needing a guide in going thro wilderness either with legs or a pen
