(In response to a letter describing my first trip to Kings River Canyon and urging the proposal to include the region in a new national park.)
Martinez, Jan. 13, 1908.
Dear Mr. Gleason:
Many thanks for your long and interesting letter, with Kings River clipping.* Our estimates of the two great Yosemites are much alike. If you care to turn to the November Century of 1891 you will see how the Kings River Yosemite appeared to me.
As to saving the Sequoias, Heaven knows I've tried hard and long; "but after U. S. patent is obtained by the spoilers, there are not Roosevelts and Heneys enough to get these forests back.
Poor Helen had another attack of pneumonia about two months ago. She is now slowly recovering in a little cottage I built for her on the Mohave desert near Daggett. The doctors say she must stay there a year or two. She is getting better, and is as cheerful as ever.

This was an interview in a Los Angeles paper in which I gave my impression Of Kings River Canyon, comparing it with Yosemite. I also spoke of the destruction of the Sequoias which I saw going on at Millwood.
