[letterhead]June 3, 1910Dear Sir:During the past spring some friends & admirers of Doctor Merriam created a trust fund for his benefit, which enables him to devote the [illegible]er of his life to geological research and to the publication of monographs [illegible] [mammals?] etc. On June 1 he retired from his position of Chief of the Biological Survey to take up this work.Mrs. Harriman (one of the principal subscribers to the fund) does not desire to figure to con[illegible]sly in the matter and is anxious to have a number of Doctor M's friends subscribe a mon[illegible]al sum so that their names may appear in the presentation book (from the founders of the fund) which is in [illegible] of preparationI am writing, therefore, to ask you as one of04778
his friends, want to subscribe five or ten dollars to the fund and write your autograph together with a line or two of appreciation of his work, or of good wishes on the accompanying. This would be forwarded as early as possible to Mr [illegible] and any check you may wish to send should be made out to his [illegible].
