Los Angeles. Cal., May 31, 1910.325 West Adams Street.Dear Mr. Colby:-I am afraid from what I can see at present I will not be able to go with you on the outing this year, for I am very busy on my book, the manuscript of which is now in the hands of Houghton Mifflin Company, while another book of animal stories for young folks is within a week or two of being ready for the printers. Then I had planned to work this summer on the small Yosemite handbook, so you see my hands are full and more than full.I think the outcome of our Hetch-Hetchy fight is under the circumstances the best possible, for it seems that in a year from now the affair will reach a final settlement which will probably put an end to the work of thieves and robbers in the Yosemite Park and other California parks at least. As to help on a grand scale from the wealthy parties you mention, something of the sort may possibly happen but I for one do not place the slightest dependence on them. We have fought the battle alone so far and I think we will win out anyhow.I had a pleasant call last evening from the Parsons, who will be in San Francisco about the end of the week. I too will soon be with you and we will talk matters over in detail.Faithfully yours,To Wm. E. Colby,302 Mills Bldg.,San Francisco, Cal.
