Los Angeles, Cal., April 29, 1910.Darling Helen:-I have been home since I wrote you last, but stayed only one day to deposit some manuscript in the bank vault, and bring a lot more down here, on which I am hard at work. It is that Pelican Bay Auto- stuff. Don't know how much longer it will take to finish it, and the trouble is it will have to be gone all over again before finally getting it into shape. It promises to run into half a dozen volumes. I am thinking of taking the animal stories out of it and publishing them separately in a volume for children and wise old people.I hope you have not given up all thought of writing a desert book. Alfalfa and cattle ticks need not take up all your time and attention and aspirations.Give my kindest regards to Miss Beal. Be kind to her, cheer her up, and do all you can towards getting her back to perfect health. With love to all the big and little Funks, Schwartz, and Van Dykes, I am, ever affectionately,Your devoted father,[illegible]
