Dear Mr. Muir: -
I am glad you like the photograph of the Araucaria. You ask about pictures of South American glaciers. The best I can do is to tell you where they are published. The glaciers of the high Andes are best shown and described by Edward Whymper in his “Travels amongst the great Andes of the equator”. New York, 1892.
Another good book on the Andes is Sir Martin Conway’s “The Bolivian Andes”, New York and London, 1901.
The glaciers of the southern end of the continent are described by Sir Martin Conway in his “Aconcagua and Tierra del Fuego”. London, 1902.
E. A. Fitsgerald’s “The highest Andes; a record of the first ascent of Aconcagua and Tupungato”, New York, 1899, gives a good account of the highest peaks, which, by the way, are not far from the railway crossing from Valparaiso to Buenos Aires.
I suppose these books can be had in the public libraries of San Francisco. But in case they cannot, I shall be glad to loan you my copies if you will let me know. They are all books that will make you want to start by the next steamer; and they are all by excellent writers and perfectly trustworthy.
