Dear Mrs. Swett –

Those doughnuts !!!! Brown cycles of delight are now doing their duty, spending their sweetness in the three Muir pilgrims at balmly palmly Palm Springs. Like the doughnuts among other food so are the Palm Spring gardens beside the blazing desert – an oasis of shade and figs and orioles. Do you remember Milton’s account of the unlucky fallen angels frying like doughnuts in burning Hades ward? So we fried and sizzled in the red hot

"[Page 2]

Sand of an orchard, and the rising sun through the desert haze was not unlike awe of those doughnuts.

Helen is decidedly better already, but we will not be able to stay here more than a week or two, for through July and August the temperature is said to be from 112 to 130 in the coolest shade. It is now 105 and is dry enough to dry up every disease and all one’s flesh besides. When thoroughly dried out and roasted out we are going to Arizona about 400 miles east of here, 22 miles north of Wilcox where the temperature is seldom above 115. With kindest regards, we are faithfully yours,

John Muir
