My dear Charles Warren Stoddard,
I have known all these years, long ago and recent that you were alive though buried in a big University and have always thought that you never should have left this sunny side wild side of the continent where your mind would have blossomed free and fruited in grand poetry.
Thank you Charlie for your kind letter. How brightly it brings back days of old when with blessed Sill we roamed San Francisco seeking wonders. Every summer we had glorious times in Gold’s wildernesses. In winter have tried to write a little. Houghton Mifflin Co are bringing out another book for me – will be out in the fall.
I am sending with this a copy of my first book and will send one of the second.
Are you never more to see California? Surely you have vacation spells. Come on and come to my house and let us unroll these years. Anyhow I am delighted to hear from you and hope silence so deathlike may never again cover us.
Heaven bless you
Ever your friend
John Muir
