ARNOLD ARBORETUM, HARVARD UNIVERSITY.

Jamaica Plain, Mass., December 26, 1902.
Dear Muir:

Yours of the 9th has just arrived. I am well pleased to hear that you are working on a review of The Silva for there is no one else in the world, I am sure, who can do it so sympathetically and intelligently for there is no one but you and I who really love the North American trees. It is a very great satisfaction to me that you are doing this piece of work.
The Siberian trip is gradually taking shape and I have got as far as deciding to take my son with me as he is young and strong and we can teach him to climb trees and make himself generally useful. He is working to be a landscape-gardener and has never been very far from home, so I have great hopes that this trip may be of service to him. I still expect to leave towards the end of May and to be back by Christmas. Do not let anything interfere with your going for we may never have another opportunity to be in the woods together.
With best wishes for the New Year to you and all your family, I am, as always, dear Muir,

Faithfully yours,

John Muir, Esq.
Martinez, Cal.
