DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR
UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY

LOS ANGELES, CAL.
December 20, 1902.

Mr. John Muir,
Martinez, Cal.

My dear Sir:

I have previously had the honor of corresponding with you concerning stream conditions of the High Sierras, and while I have never had the pleasure of a personal interview, still from reading numerous articles which you have written, I feel as if I were quite well acquainted.
As you know, the Federation of Womens Clubs have of late taken up with very considerable vigor and intelligence the subject of forestry and the extension of the forest reserves of the United States. These ladies are representatives of some of our very best class of citizens and are materially aiding in moulding public Sentiment in favor of scientific forestry. They are making a programme for study along forestry lines this winter, and in that connection are endeavoring to obtain the services of some of our leaders in these investigations. In short, they desire to have you lecture before the Friday Morning Club at Los Angeles. This club is large and representative. I feel quite sure that if you can see your way clear to comply with their request that you will not only be serving them but serving the state.
Trusting that you may give their communications careful consideration, as I know you will, I remain,

Very truly yours,

[illegible]
