My dear Muir:

I cannot tell from your note on Mr. Powers’s letter of the 29th of March whether you have yet given him permission to use your dog story as an advertisement. We think it would be very unadvisable for you to do so, and we have been considering for some time how we could best make a separate publication of this story. We are now trying an experiment with another story of about the same length; if that is a success we shall probably follow with others— no doubt with "Stickeen." I wonder what Shakspere would think if he saw the play of "Hamlet" used to sell Danish bloodhounds! It strikes me that literature is now in a bad way. However, I am going to publish my collected poems next month and try to elevate the standard of the profession.

Yours cordially,

[illegible]Associate Editor.
