[First draft of letter, in note-book #59] (49)
[Jan.'02].
Mr. Ray Stannard Baker,
McC lure's Magazine,
141 East Twenty-fifth St.,
New York.
Dear Mr. B[aker]:
I think pictures of my friends Emerson, Gray, Hooker, etc. would have a brag look and be out of place in an article about me. Better leave them out, even if you have obtained permission to publish them. As to a nature book made up of old letters, I have often thought of collecting these letters and putting them in shape for publica-tion in book from. I have drawn from some of them in my articles, and others have made free with them. Still enough may be left for a small book of first impressions which might be worth reading, and I'll think about [it] after getting a lot of other work off my hands.
With thanks for your suggestions and kind offers, I am,
Faithfully yours,
J. M.02890
