[First draft of letter, in note-book #59]

[1901]

Mrs. Eliza M. E. Hartley,

Dear Mrs. H[artley]:I remember you very well, though I have wandered far and wide in the 20 or 25 years since I made your acquaintance in Sacramento. Those Sacramento lectures were the first and almost the last I ever delivered, and I am not a lecturer at all now. My time is all spent in studies in the wilderness or in writing.
I am very glad to hear from you after all these years, and shall be happy to meet you again at the very first opportunity. Regretting [that] I can’t lecture, I am, with pleasant recollections,
Very truly yours,

J. M.
