[first draft of letter, in note-book #59] (24)
Martinez, Nov. 28, 1901.
My dear Mr. Balnaves:
It is very kind of yon to Invite me to the St. Andrews dinner, and I heartily thank you. Nothing in the banqueting line would give me greater pleasure [than] to meet with so many of my countrymen under such happy auspices. I have delayed reply to your kind invitation until now, hoping I might be able to accept. But alas, I'm held here by obligations and burdens that I cannot escape, and must, therefore, deny myself the grand pleasure.
Hoping we may meet ere long, I am, with many thanks and pleasant Tuolumne memories,
Very truly yours,
J. M.
