Nov. 17, '01.
Dear Mr. Johnson:
I was busy planning the Yo[semite] book we spoke of years ago when your letter came.
Now that the Park and Reservation book is off my hands I am making a beginning on the Yo[semaite] book we spoke of years ago. Possibly some of the new material may be available for an article or two in the cent[ury]. I'll go to S. F. in a day or two and look at Robinson's sketches and photos, and report on what I think of this.
I'm glad to hear that Owen [Johnson] is going bravely ahead. No doubt he will make a good worthy place for himself.
Of course we heard and felt the Tammany earthquake. Well done I And now that the President is so sturdy a friend of civil service reform we may expect a great extension of the rules.
We are all well as usual. Wanda is at the State University. As for the Auto [biography] [about] which you and Houghton Mif[flin] and other publishers have so much to say, I have not written a word of it, [and cannot] until I get other things of more importance off my hands. How is your own Auto [biography] coming on? Good luck.
Ever cordially yours,
J. M.
I ordered a copy of my park book sent to your address.
