Dear Mr. Muir,
We are very much obliged to you for the copy for the preface aUd dedication of your book, which we are sending promptly to press, and are glad to have your assurance that we may look for the index promptly after the last pages of proof have reached you.Thank you also for your permission to read proof of the index here and so save time.
In regard to the title-page, we fear the change you suggest is not practicable, for the reason that we have now nearly completed the book and cannot make the change in page headings throughout the book as would be necessary. To have the title on the title-page different from the title in the rest of the book would, we think, be inadmissible. We have, moreover, made all. our announcements of the book under the present title, and fear any change in titles might prejudice its chance[illegible] of success.
I am sorry the change seems so difficult to make, and hope that it is not of moment to you.
Yours sincerely,
Mr. John Muir.
