Dear Mr. Muir,

NOw that we have got your book at arte d to the process of manufacture, the usual questions come up as to whether we are to have Introduction or prefaoe and index.A prefatory note at [illegible] seems to me desirable in order to point out one or two general changes which have taken place in the parks since the greater number of your artides were written, such as the addition of one to the Index,to every book there 'oeing five now instead of four.As to the Index, though I am not one of those who think there should be an Index to every book, I can see advantages about an Index to your volume. But we aa.r74 should be guided entirely by your prefer, ences in the matter. If there is to be an Index you would doubtess prefer to make it yourself, so as to be sure of having it entirely satisfactory to you.

Sincerely yours,
n.b.parker.

Mr. John Muir.
