My dear Muir:

I have not before been able to thank you for the good wishes in your note of the 28th of December, which, I assure you, are heartily reciprocated by the Johnson family.
I am glad to know that you are turning yourthoughts to the autobiography. What we want you to do is to begin at your childhood and throw as much light on the world as you can all the way down, filling it with entertaining, interesting, suggestive, practical, helpful and significant material, Just as you would if you were sitting down to a chat at.327 Lexington Avenue with your friend the subscriber. If I can stir you up to do this I shall consider that my work in life is not wholly a failure.
As to the Yosemite, the sprinkling idea is all well enough. You remember we suggested that to them twelve years ago.I hope, however, that the butterflies and moths of the valley will unite in swarming about the "re-flectivesw so ar> to obscure the vari-colored light about the falls.

Fathfully yours,

[illegible]
