My dear Mr Muir
How very kind of you to send me such an excellent photograph! The likeness could not have been made stronger. I am very happy to have it. Mine was taken a month or two since and I am almost ready to send you one; but as you go to the Mountains so soon, I should be shut up for months, and I shrink from the isolation. book reviews be made so interesting. The topic in this case favored, and the reviewer thoroughly at home on the subject. I will get the book for it must be a rich store of good things, The anecdotes illustrated so well, and were [underlined: too amusing!] I remember of being much surprised last Summer to learn what you speak of here, the transition from Scotch to English, and I cannot account for it. Is the same condition il- lustrated by any other people? So you are soon to be in the Mountains; How happy you will be. I Know your thoughts will wander in pity occasionally, and sympathy, to your less fortunate fellow mortals whose circumstances

circumscribe their desires (or actions.) I hope the season will be full of interesting results, and that you will continue well. Give my love to all the little Mountain flowers and tell the Ouzel of sunny spots in peoples hearts he has made and little dreams of I will watch for Scribner. I am sorry you will not be able to go to Chico. Annie writes of still newer drives, and flowers. She seems to be making a large collection of plants. How sad, how sad, the closing scene in the life of the great Hugh Miller! I am now delving a little into the forests of California in reading the Ethnology of the State.
