Mr. John Muir, L.T.D).,
Martinez,
Cal.

Dear Sir:-

Under our arrangements with the publishers, Messrs. Adam and Charles Black, we are preparing a large Supplement to the ENCY-CLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA, which will not only "bring that work up to date, but with the earlier volumes will serve as a new edition. The enclosed slip will give you further particulars regarding the work and its Editors.
We should he glad to secure your co-operation in this undertaking, and should value highly a signed contribution from You on the "Yosemite Valley". There is, we think, no one so well qualified to write on this subject as yourself, and no one whose contribution will carry so much weight both in this country and in Great Britain. We hope, therefore, that you will be able to contribute this article to the new volumes of the ENCYCLOPAEDIA BRITANNICA.

As "Yosemite Valley" falls under the letter Y, and therefore comen so far down in the alphabet, we should not need the contribution until the end of the spring, but we should be glad to learn now that you will undertake the article, for which we shall take
