Martinez, Jan. 1, 1900.
My dear Dr. Merriam,
With all my heart I wish you a happy New Year and congratulate you on getting your desks cleared for new work this strange-sounding A.D. 1900. Mine are far from clear. I'm still pegging away on trees and brush for a little book on National Parks Forest Reserves etc. Hope to get it off my hands by early spring when I may take another run through the southern forests with Sargent, and may then chance to find you ere you take flight for the summer. I'm glad to hear of the good Harriman times you are having in Washington and that Burroughs is to get the story of the grand trip into literature so early. No doubt it will be well done. As for the icy part I'm to do, I can't say when it can be done but I'll do the best I can as soon as prior engagements are got rid of. Have you seen Charlie Keeler's bird book just out? If not I'll send you a copy, though it will coals to Newcastle. It will be a pleasant reminder of a charming bird lover and of our novel excursion on the Elder. My girls are studying your sister's books and find them charming. Remember me to all the wondrous Harriman congregation you see. I don't know in the least how I am to get out of your debt for this rich trip. Good luck to you. Don't work too hard.
Ever your friend,
JOHN MUIR
