Not a day shall go by, dear Mr. Muir, before I tell you of my grateful appreciation of your thought of me and your kindness in sending me your book. I rather considered myself one of the lesser lights of that joyous party of a year ago, but your charming inscription leads me to believe that I did give some pleasure. And I am so glad I did and more glad that I could. There was much merriment when the "postie" brought the package to "Winnie Skylark". I loved that, Mr. Muir. There was not time to sit down and go right to the reading of it, but I glanced at the chapter headings to see what was in store for me, and recognized some of the delightful stories you told us last summer. Now I am more eager than ever to start the precious book. It is and shall be one of my cherished possessions, and I thank you for it.
Mrs. Kellogg and Dorothy were with me here in Detroit for six weeks this summer and we had a lovely visit together. I expect to be in California some time during the winter, and shall hope to see you somewhere out there and thank you personally. May I sing to you too?
