Dear Mr Calkins:
Many thanks for your long kind letter I often thought of you in your orange grove home & hoped the killing frost of last winter had hurt you but lightly as your place is so near the mountain foothills.
I wish our homes were fewer miles apart. All my notes - a huge pile are here- the gatherings of a lifetime, & it's hard to move, only six volumes published as yet out of material for more than a hundred. Am now at work on my Alaska travels, and as soon as they are off my hands I mean to write another autobio volume.
With all good wishes for yourself & family I am ever faithfully yours
