No. 90 LaSalle St Chicago [ Feby?] 11th 1878

Mr. John Muir, San Francisco, Cal. My dear Sir: I want to thank you for the pleasure your “Humming Bird of the California Waterfalls” in Scribner has given me. We have read and re-read it at home with increasing pleasure and can abound with it music poetry and artistic expression. You are one of the [underlined: true] poets, I [illegible] there were more such in [ our world?]. In this [ busy?] mate- sail age we are too often blind and deaf to the sights and sounds of nature. The harmonies seem to be recognized by the few

Have you not written some books or other sketches to which you could refer me? We should all be glad to read them. it is not everyday one finds such pure delight in literature. I gained you address from Mr R. [ N.?] Gilder of Scribner’s. I am very truly yours [illegible] Laud[illegible]
