Dear brother John:

Yours of Dec. 23 came safely, and it did certainly look good to see your handwriting again.
I am surprised that you are in Martinez at this season of the year, as I supposed you went further South in the winter. I am sorry, too, that you are so much alone, for although it doubtless is favorable to your writing, yet it is not pleasant.
I had a very nice letter from Sarah recently, who mentioned your new books. I fear I am not keeping up with them. I read your "First Summer in the Sierras" in the Atlantic Monthly, but have not seen your later book about the Yosemite. If you have an extra copy, I would be very glad to have you send it, and if not, please tell me to which of the publishers to send for it.
I spent a portion of the summer with Mary before leaving Nebraska. She is growing old, like the rest of us, but still maintains her enthusiasm for her art. She has many pretty pictures, all of which were new to me, as I had not visited her in her home for thirty years.
With sincere thanks for your kindness in sending the check for Christmas gifts, I am,

Very affectionately yours,

Joanna [Muir Brown]
