Dear Mr. Colby:
I suppose you have seen this Call editorial on H.H., and may have written in a reply. Now that the Eastern papers have taken up the question, the Phelan scheme organs will be compelled to come out in the open, though evidently they hoped to put the scheme through under cover of silence and darkness.
Besides the letter from the Cherry Creek's president, I had one lately from a Stanislaus Company stating they had abundance of water available for city supply, but did not wish to interfere in the H.H. fight, etc. going to show that there is some sort of monopoly understanding as to securing all the water power in the state.
The argument in the Call editorial that the beauty of H.H. would not be impaired, but enhanced, is Hanson over again. It would be enhanced just as the Golden Gate Park or Central Park would be if buried under one hundred and seventy five feet of water. And always these schemers take it for granted that only H.H. water can save the dear, California people from dying of thirst and disease, and that only the water passing through H.H. runs to waste in the sea. I wish Henry could be put on this job. But Spreckels, as I fear, is in with Phelan. A Committee appointed by the President to examine other sources seems likely to be made available.
Your reply to the Outlook editorial is first rate. Hope they'll print it. Please return the Call clipping, and give me your news if you have any.
Helen is a little better.
Ever yours,
John Muir.
